[box type="shadow"]Question 8 of the BlissMB 30 Day Meme: Pick an awareness / organisation / charity that you think people should pay more attention to. And why? [/box]
This is going to be a boring but informative blog today. Plus, I’m a bit tired after spending the whole day in New York City. Maybe I’ll blog a bit about that over at CaityFit tomorrow since I’m so busy with the 30 Day Meme here so check it out.
I think that people should be more aware of the earth and taking care of it.
I think that we should learn to recycle more and be more aware of ways to conserve resources and energy.
Here is a list of some things that you can do to help. Maybe you haven’t thought of some of these things before. What can you add to my list?
- Use reusable shopping bags.
- Wash your clothes in cold water.
- Hang your clothes out to dry instead of using a dryer.
- Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation.
- Take a shorter shower.
- Use tap water/filter your own water instead of using bottled water.
- Don’t litter. Clean up after yourself.
- Use natural sunlight instead of electricity for light during the day.
- Recycle.
- Do not print things that can easily be sent electronically. Don’t waste paper.
- Use rechargeable batteries.
- Eat more local foods.
- Grow your own food. Keep your own garden with vegetables or herbs.
- Turn down the heat in your house at night and when you are not home.
- Keep your computer on power saving mode, sleep mode, or off whenever you walk away from it.
- Install solar panels on your home.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd but we live on this earth every day and we need to take care of it 365 days a year – not just one. What do you do to keep our earth healthy?

Very nice list. :) Some things to add to it that are super simple:
* Unplug your computer and other large items when you go on trips – even when things are off, power is still being used.
* Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket, this will cut down on energy use because your water will stay hot longer.
* Make use of windows instead of AC.
* Reuse printed paper by printing on the other side (I do this all the time unless the document is being sent for some legal issue).
* Re-purpose anything and everything you can instead of throwing it away.
I’ll re-emphasize SHOP LOCAL. Most people have no idea how much energy and earth is consumed by the process of shipping things to you. Not to mention your body will thank you for eating locally grown food.
And most of all EDUCATE YOURSELF. Doesn’t really take much digging these days to find out what’s going on and what you can do to help. <3
Ooh, great list! I especially like Grow your own food and Do not print things. It’s incredible how many people (especially older people) print every single email they get! That’s why you have storage space on a disk, people. I do have another one to add! Reuse! It is so important. Reuse paper for DIY projects, make milk cartons into pots for plants, reuse the paper bags you got when you forgot your canvas bags for carrying things or just for other trips to the grocery store. Buy glass bottles instead of plastic and reuse them for water, vases, as a cool pitcher for wine at the table, and so on. Fix your shoes/gadgets/furniture/etc instead of replacing them. Buy used!
Two great lists in one blog! I think it’s great for you to share this. I already do a pretty good amount of the things on this list. I actually need to move my reusable bags to my car. I have an entire box full that I never use.
I KNOW Dad and I are bad with how many paper products we use!!! ~ But, on the positive side . . . Dad is getting into solar energy in his oil business . . . and that’s a good thing! ~ You make some very good points on your list! So does Keeshia! ~ I’ll have to try harder! ~ Love, Mom
Awesome list! here are two to add –
1. Use cloth menstrual pads and diapers
2. Wash clothes in cold water; also, do loads of laundry at night, when electricity usage is cheaper
I never knew electricity is cheaper at night! Guess you learn something new every day!
You become crazy aware of your carbon foot print when you start having kids (not saying you aren’t before then, of course). We’ve noticed how much packaging comes with kids’ toys, how much gets wasted as kids outgrow clothes and toys and where your kids food comes from. We’re trying to buy local, fresh, organic food; buy/make handmade toys and clothes; donate everything we don’t need anymore instead of tossing it; saving money instead of mindlessly consuming just because we can. It’s hard to change your view points, but even the smallest changes add up.
