The Drive to French Pass

I have been without the internet for so long that I am so behind in my blogging. It almost seems silly to blog about something that happened such a long time ago but it seems even more silly to me to not blog about it at all. I also want to give all of the adventures that I have had in that time the proper attention instead of plopping them all into one post and being done with it so I’m going to continue to blog like this until I’m all caught up. I just felt the need to clarify this fact even if it was just to myself.

So… back in the start of July… *giggles*

Josh and I took a trip out to French Pass which is at the second most northern tip of the South Island of New Zealand to visit Josh’s Dad who was staying there. He lives in a bus and travels around the South Island, moving around where he works. The drive out to French Pass was one of the most beautiful things that I had ever seen.

Warning: photo overload!

This was one of the first things I saw coming around the bend and I almost died. Beautiful Maui’s Ropes coming out of the sky.

Driving along the road and looking over at the water was one of the most breathtaking things I’ve ever seen. It’s definitely my favourite drive in New Zealand so far if not my favourite place.

The roads themselves were definitely not what I’m used to, however. New York doesn’t have anything like THIS. New York has eight lane highways and streets that, well, don’t have any hills or curves. Also, this is a two way road. Yeah.

It’s a good thing we didn’t meet many cars on the way or I think I would have FREAKED out. Good thing Josh was driving. He’s used to this sort of thing.

Haha. Sheep. They’re just chillin’.

These trees are permanently sideways because of the wind. There was no wind while we were there but the wind blows so hard at times that the trees just stay like that. Crazy!

Josh and I got out and walked around for a while.

Josh is just waiting for me by our awesome little Fiat.

Do you think you could handle driving on roads like this?
I’m used to it now but only as a passenger. I haven’t tested out driving on them yet!

Next time… stay tuned for fishing adventures at French Pass! :)

  1. I’ve actually driven on roads like that in West Virginia and Southern Ohio, so yeah I could do it =D!

That place is so beautiful, anyone that doesn’t understand why you want to live there isn’t looking close enough :P.

  2. So beautiful!! I would never be able to drive on that road :s lol It looks a bit like the Slea head drive in Ireland with the skinny road. Your pictures are awesome! I think I like the last one best. I have a thing for scenic pictures with roads in them lol. The trees are neat too. Where I use to live there’s a bunch of trees along the ocean side roads that are leaning like that, permanently windblown into that tilted position. Looking forward to the next adventure! ;)

I LOVE the photo of the Maui Ropes coming out of the sky! It’s beautiful. It’s nice to see you posting all your photos. Makes me feel more like I’m there with you. ~ Looking forward to your next post! ~ Love, Mom

  4. Gooooorgeouuuss!! I love it. No qualms here about driving on windy dirt roads. I was brought up by an oil man, which means a lot of CRAPPY washboard dirt roads, some of which are more cow trails than roads, and going at least 40mph.

I kind of forget that people aren’t used to it. A couple weeks ago we were camping in the mountains and a car from Colorado was just crawwwwlinng along at 20mph, and this was on a well groomed dirt road. The speed limit is 65!

I think the lack of guard rails might scare me sometimes though.

Also, I love the look of windblown half-trees. I read a quote somewhere once that the worst weather makes the best photos (it was more eloquent), and it’s my favorite photo quote now.

  5. We have roads like that where I grew up in WA! But New Zealand is SO much prettier.

  6. So beautiful!!! I could get used to that scenery! I couldn’t drive on roads like that, but I think my fiance could handle it. He’s pretty adaptable. :)

  7. The pictures/scenery are beautiful!!

I so want to come and see all the amazing things that you’re a part of now. If I make it to NZ, would you and Josh put me up?? Kidding ;)

  8. AH! I somehow missed your return! So glad you are back blogging on the interwebs! Love the gorgeous photos. Jealous!

  11. I always have problems like that with blogging. If too much time passes I feel silly blogging about it. Boo.
