I’m getting really sick of my summer break. I am one of those people who doesn’t do very well without something to do. I miss work. I love my job. I miss my coworkers and my students. Josh had a few weeks off and we got to actually go a few places but now he’s back at work too. I’ll give you an example of how I cope with being cooped up.

Things I planned to do on my summer break:

  • Read 10 books! Or more! There are so many books I want to read!
  • Make lots of hemp jewelry.
  • Take lots of pictures and work on my (nonexistant) photography skills.
  • Get lots of schoolwork done. What else do teachers do on summer break?
  • Spring cleaning! Clean my whole house!
  • Do lots of exercise and eat healthy.
  • Go on some nature walks and take pictures.
  • Bike rides.
  • Probably heaps of other productive things that I’ve forgotten about.

Things I actually did on my summer break:

  • Read 2 books.
  • Do a little bit of school work.
  • Play lots of games on my iPhone.
  • Discover and become addicted to Spotify.
  • Refresh Facebook and Reddit.
  • Exercise a bit. The healthy eating is going alright, though.

So besides kickstart my healthy habits (which I suppose I should give myself a bit of credit for – I’ve even lost 4 pounds) I really didn’t do anything. I’m starting to go a bit stir crazy here. I still have until the 30th of January until I go back into work (but luckily I have a parent meeting that Monday so I can pretend it starts before then).

Granted, I could solve all my problems by just stopping the complaining and just looking up to my first list, picking something, and doing it.

If you want, you can solve some of my problems by playing smartphone games with me. You can find me on most games under the username caitysparkles.

  • I’m pretty much the same way! This weekend is a long weekend in the States due to MLK Day and Obama’s inauguration. I have a long to-do list consisting of things around the house I want to do, but haven’t gotten around to doing (like… finally put away the last one or two things in my suitcase from my Hong Kong trip, which I returned from two weeks ago?!) But knowing me, I’ll probably just lounge around and waste a lot of time on the Internet. Oops.

    • Haha I still have my suitcase sitting here unpacked from Christmas vacation too. I’m horrible.

  • Plans are over rated.

  • I’d give anything for high school length holidays again. I still have a month and six days to go! And this is after almost three months of holiday. It’s horrible.

Making hemp jewellery sounds like fun. I think you should pick that one from your list!

    • Haha yes I’d probably go insane with even more holiday. I’d have to take a class or something.

I think I will get started on the hemp jewellery.

  • Oh, I’m the same way. My two-month holidays in elementary school were okay (though they got long by the end), but the three months in high school were unbearable! I have over four months now that I’m in university, so I’m hoping to work a decent amount of hours a week (say 20-25) so that I’m occupied and can save a nice amount of money.

Even though your holidays are nearly over, I don’t think it’s too late to pick something from the list and do it!

  • *jealous*
Although I’d be mega bored, and far too lazy to do anything, I can’t help but be jealous right now. Probably because I see the word “summer”. Here its snowing! Everything is covered in a layer of white, deceiving snow. Deceiving as it looks like fun, but in reality, it wants be to go outside so I fall and amuse it.

Also jealous, as right now I’m thinking of how I’m getting to work in the morning with the previously mentuoned snow everywhere.

And then jealous again as I only get 4 weeks holiday a year and they’re all taken with not-very-holiday-like plans. So no stress free, relaxing weeks for me this year :(

I hope the rest doesn’t drag too badly for you though!

    • Yeah, about a few weeks from now I will probably be wanting to have another holiday. It always works like that.

  • I’m terrible at sitting still too. This is why I’m afraid to quit my job. Hopefully, the time goes by quickly and you’ll be back in school before you know it!

  • I found it hard over winter break myself to do the things I wanted/needed to do. I think I’m better with deadlines – like if you give yourself a deadline to only do school planning in the first week, then you’re more likely to accomplish it. Stuff like that :) But enjoy your time off anyways! It’s all about giving yourself some time to recharge for a bit, relax! You’ve worked hard during the school year and need a bit of a breather, whether you realize it or not.

    • That’s a good idea. I should make a deadline for things to do for the rest of my break! Hahaha.

  • I hate breaks. They always seem so exciting but unless I actually go somewhere, I just waste them. My only goal during winter break was to finish six books and I failed at that!

At least your break is almost over, good luck going back!

  • How long is your Summer Break? Is it a few months? If so, then how long is your Winter Break, or do you not have one? Actually, what’s one school term like? Because it seems like it’s quite different from what they are in the USA.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope it helps you pass the time quickly. :)

  • Like you, I also cannot do well when there is little to do. I get restless. When I was still in school, we would have summer breaks that last for almost three months, and after about one to one and a half, I would find myself going nuts.

I hope you find more things to do while waiting for the new school year to begin.

    Wishing you shorter days ahead.

    • Yeah, I’ve always been this way. I went to summer school for fun when I was a kid to learn more fun skills or take fun classes in the community. Next year I’ll just have to make more plans. Thanks!

  • Haha, well at least your summer break is almost over. It’s so nice that you long to go back to work. I wish I loved my job that much. :D

  • I hear you on procrastinating with iPhone games, so in that spirit, I found you on DrawSomething and Words with Friends :) I’m SasMeister. Don’t worry – vacations are for bumming around! You lost 4 pounds – that’s hard work – good job!

    • Yay! Thanks for finding me on the iPhone games! I love your username. Thanks for the encouragement. I guess I have accomplished something. :)

  • I never make plans because, well I never stick to them. At all. Unless of course, they involve other people.

Congratulations on losing the 4 pounds!

  • That’s why you’re so quick with the DrawSomthing! lol What else do you play?? ;)
I am one of those people that actually enjoys time at home…although every time I do have time I always want to work on my photography but I spend the whole time playing video games and listening to music. But I cannot sit and do nothing. I have a weird thing though that it’s only ‘time off’ during the day, the evenings when I would have been off work anyways are normal evenings. Also, last time I has some unrequested time off I spent a lot of time spending money :/

    • Words With Friends, Hanging With Friends, Matching With Friends, Scramble With Friends, Song Pop, Letterpress, and random other ones occasionally…

  • It’s strange to think you’re having your summer break, but it doesn’t sound like you have a long break if you go back January 30th, but enjoy it while you can.

By the way, I take exception to this statement of yours: “Take lots of pictures and work on my (nonexistant) photography skills.” I might not if you took out the word “nonexistent”….you take beautiful pictures and don’t very doubt it. It’s one of my favorite things about your blog…seeing pictures of NZ and places you visit, as well as new kitties:~)

    • Oh thank you for that compliment!!! :)
And we have been off since the first week in December so it has been quite a while!

  • At first I was like.. why is she planning her summer break already, it’s Jan– and then I was very “ohhhhh, riiiiight. It’s summer in NZ. D-uh!” :D

Do you REALLY do that much during a break, woman? I just flop around watching bad TV and rub many cat bellies, and then feel sad the break is over. :D

    • Haha yes it’s summer here!
That’s the point – that’s what I have been doing and I’m going a bit stir crazy now.

  • Oh What’ I’d do for a break now! :(

  • Well . . . yesterday was your first day back to school/work! Hope it was a wonderful one! :)

  • You’re one of the few people I know who WANTS to get back to work! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? :P — kidding!

I always look forward to my days off… and once they arrive, I don’t know what to do with myself! I feel like my entire day is thrown off — unorganized. I think the days that I do work, I’m more productive. So I guess I can (kinda) understand where you are coming from. ;)

    • Yeah, I’m a creature of routine. I also love the people I work with and they have all gone away on vacation.

  • First off its so cool you live in NZ. I have always wanted to visit there. Your probably the only person I met who wants to go back to work. I’m thinking whats wrong with you.
What two books did you read?
I hope exercising is going alright.
    I’m Julia by the way.

    • Thanks! I know it’s rare to love your job but I am so fortunate to have a job I truly enjoy.

I read The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Nighttime by Mark Haddon and Between The Lines by Jodi Picoult.

  • Congratulations on your weight loss! I can definitely relate to the summer break feeling AND the enjoyment of staying busy. I teach, but I also work at an after school program and write for the local newspaper. So even in the summer I have a few things to do, just because otherwise I go insane!

    • Thanks very much! Yeah, there is not really much to do here in the summer in such a small town. Next time I am going to take a longer vacation.

  • Picture taking would be one of my interests as well. My skills would probably be better if I could get my hands on a better camera. ^_^
Congrats on your weight loss. ^_^
I have been in a whirlwind this past semester and the busyness is definitely keeping me on my toes. I don’t think I would have it any other way but it would be nice if it slowed down just the slightest bit.
