Ngawi: The great pāua adventures!

It is Josh’s birthday tomorrow and we are having a little BBQ. One of the things Josh really wanted to have at his birthday shindig was pāua fritters. That meant we needed to get some pāua! So, this afternoon Josh and I and one of our flatmates took a ride to the beach to get some!

Ngawi
Josh and his friend went in to get the pāua. The water was still a bit too cold for me. We really should have had wet suits but oh well! They’re hardcore, that’s all!

Ngawi
Still searching for some! It took a while to find them!

Ngawi
It was so beautiful out there.

Ngawi
The mountains.

Ngawi
It was a really beautiful sunset.

Ngawi
Purple mountains magesty?

Ngawi
My attempt at a dramatic rearview mirror sunset shot failed miserably. I had good intentions, though!

Ngawi
The haul! We got 28 pāua. The legal limit is 10 per person but it got cold and was getting dark so they called it. I think it’s cool because 28 is my lucky number.

I was a bit disappointed because I thought that the pāua would be pretty! The pāua actually do have beautiful shells that are used in jewelry and other things but I guess when you first take them out of the ocean they are gross. I am hoping to wash off a pretty shell or two to keep for myself because they are so pretty.

Now Josh and our flatmate are going to work on gutting those things and grinding them up in a meat grinder so we can make some fritters tomorrow!

  1. Aww that’s a shame, they do look kinda gross. I’m sure if you give them a wash and a clean they will look really lovely and unique. I’ve never heard of them before!

I hope Josh has a lovely birthday and an awesome celebration to match. :D The sky is awesome. <3

  2. Just discovered your blog! It’s great!
I find it totally weird how Americans love all the hills and trees and… grass lol
I would so love to move to New York and would probably prefer to live there – with all the skyscrapers, shops and cultural diversity – rather than here in plain New Zealand.
I guess when you grow up in New Zealand you take it all for granted.
It’s also been interesting finding out differences between the U.S and NZ (date/holidays/enviromental concern etc).
Keep up the good work! :D

    • Thank you so much Jared! I’m glad you enjoy my blog! I grew up in New York so I really appreciate all the natural beauty that NZ has to offer. I always took New York for granted. :P

  3. What is pāua? They look strange!

    • Maybe you’ve heard of abalone or ormer shells? It’s the same thing. It’s basically a big mollusc or sea snail.

  4. Food like always tastes better than it looks, I’m sure I’d love pāua as long as I didn’t know what it was or where it came from. The shells do look really pretty once they’re gutted and cleaned. I’d love to see your shots of the shells, you have so much talent with your camera! Lovely shot of the guys in the ocean, too.

  5. New Zealand looks beautiful. I’ve always wanted to be in a place where I could make my own food from start to end and plant my own garden and go fishing and seafood-catching. I don’t think the pāua look ugly in that picture; I really like the rosy color and the patterns on the shells!

  6. Is looks like pāua is like mussels or oysters, the outside shell is not so pretty but the inside is all shiny and pretty. That is a gorgeous sunset shot that you got!! I miss the ocean so much! The clouds look so cool!! I hope you have/had a great bbq!!

    • Yeah, they are like a big mollusc. Thank you!! I’m glad I still live pretty nearby to the ocean because I would definitely miss it.

  7. Um, so we can all come visit, right? Because WOW gorgeous. Happy birthday to Josh!

  8. What a gorgeous place! Happy Birthday to Josh!

  9. Lovely pictures

but what exactly is pāua /??

    • Maybe you’ve heard of abalone or ormer shells? It’s the same thing. It’s basically a big mollusc or sea snail.

  10. The inside is pretty! I love the pictures. When we went hunting for sea creatures in the low tides we just wore rubber boots. It’s still the COOLEST memory I have of the beach house in France, with all of the marine biology!

  11. The scenery is amazing, Caity!
Honestly, the paua look a bit gross, but then again I’m not a big fan of shellfish. I’m curious to see how the shells look like after you’ve washed them.

  12. The landscape is very pretty!!! Pāua looks very interesting. Happy Birthday to your hubby!!!

  13. Wow, those look cool! I hope that your fritters come out good! I’ve never had anything like that before. I’m very picky with my seafood. But they remind me of clams a little bit. What’s the flavor like?

  14. Caitlin's MOM

Hi, Caitlin! It looks as if you guys had a great day! I’m glad! I think the INSIDE if the paua shell is the pretty part. Once you clean them I guess you’ll find out! ~ Hope you all have a great time at Josh’s bar-be-cue birthday. Wish him a happy birthday from us! ~ Love, Mom

  15. It’s so pretty! I hope Josh had a great birthday. What did the paua taste like?

    • Thanks!! The paua basically tasted like a clam or a mussle. It was too fishy for me at first but then we added an egg and some flour and lemon juice to the fritters and it was super good.

  16. Did you know im allerigc to anything that comes out of the ocean. Sucks because when I was a kid, I could eat all the seafood I wanted.

Gorgeous pictures. If it wasn’t raining today I think I’d go to the beach for a swim

  17. Wow, AMAZING skies!!

    How were the fritters?

    xoxo

    • Thanks! The fritters were very yummy especially after we added some flour, egg, and lemon juice!

  18. Oh my gosh how gorgeous. You are so lucky to get to experience this!

  19. The circle lenses are actually prescription so you should try it out at least once in your life ;)

  20. Gorgeous photos! That sunset was amazing! Happy Birthday to Josh!

  21. What is Pāua? The pictures look really nice. :)

  22. Whoa. I have never heard of pāua. They look interesting. I would be curious to know what they tasted like! :)

  23. That looks… weird, but interesting. Not the scenery, the sea snails! The scenery is beautiful, of course. I wish I had that kind of scenery in my backyard.

  24. Well, I hope it tastes yummy because it definitely does not look so pretty, lol. I love the pictures of the scenery! I am so jealous and so want to visit there one day!

  25. Aw wow those pictures are amazing!

  26. Those photos are beautiful – and that sunset really is amazing.
I hope Josh has a fantastic birthday :)

  27. That scenery is just… wow. The sunset photo is absolutely gorgeous but those pāua look horrible, but I’m not a fan of seafood in the slightest.

I hope you had a nice day for Josh’s birthday.

  28. Aww man, those photos makes me wish I was further out in the country, just for a little while! Where exactly did you guys go to get the paua? We used to be able to get pipi out here, but now i think it’s banned or too dirty or maybe a combination of the two, we don’t/cant do that anymore :(

    • We got the paua at a beach called Ngawi. It’s by cape Palliser at the bottom of the North Island, I think!
