I’m not talking bee hives.

Today was awful. I had an allergic reaction of some sort and broke out in hives all over. I had hives all over my body (thankfully not my face and neck, though). Of course it’s a day I chose to wear a short sleeve shirt. Always my luck.

As far as I know, I’m not allergic to anything. I guess that doesn’t hold true anymore. This has happened a number of times in the past year so I guess I’ve developed an allergy to something. My friends were kinds enough to drive me around looking for Benadryl, the lovely little allergy pill, on their lunch break today. I was very appreciative.

The Benadryl helped a little bit and got me through the workday, but it made me extremely tired and I ended up taking a 2-hour nap when I got home from work. I’m still exhausted, though, and I’m sure I’ll sleep through the night. I’m just absolutely beat. I’ve had the worst luck health-wise over the past year and a half.

I think I’ll call the allergist tomorrow. I think the reason I’ve been putting it off is because I am scared he’s going to tell me I’m allergic to something I love. Like bananas. Or chick peas. Or my cat. Nobody wants to hear that. However, I’m done with this. Allergic reactions are scary and when I had trouble breathing today before I got my double dose of Benadryl, I realized I was done fooling around.

The beast sleeps. (by caitysparkles)

Just cross your fingers I’m not allergic to my cat.
I mean… come on… who can resist those cuddles?

I go to Dr. Guida in Bay Shore; the initial appointment is long, but you never have to make an appointment after that – just walk in. They did one simple blood draw that determined I had a major allergy to hornets (not even bees or wasps), and mild allergies to latex and white oak. I now have to carry around an Epi-Pen in case I ever get stung.

So sorry to hear that Caity! I hope it’s nothing serious.

  3. Shellie February 23, 2010

Eeek, I’m sorry!!! I hope you figure out the allergy soon!

  4. Britney February 24, 2010

Not only did you survive the hives, but you survived the Benadryl too. :P Honestly, I don’t know how anyone stands that stuff. Okay, it’s not that bad, but I still don’t like how tired it makes you. Dramamine (which is like Benadryl, but a slightly different form of the ingredient) is worse though. I really can’t stand that stuff.

I took an allergy-test once that told me that I was allergic to cats. I’ve never reacted on a cat in my entire life! I do however react on citrus-fruits (like oranges), but the test showed no signs of that. So it’s not always accurate, and if you are allergic to cats, then there might be some pills to take as a quick fix! Good luck :)

Hopefully it’s an allergy to something you’re not keen on anyway, but sometimes people do develop allergies to pets even if they’ve had pets all their life. If the pill worked it should mean that whatever it is won’t effect your life so much.

I broke out in hives last year, quite a few times. I ended up going to the doctor and finding out it was MSG they asian people use in restaurants. Which majorly sucks. No more spring rolls for me :(

  8. Georgina February 24, 2010

I’m so sorry about your strange reactions. I really hope you find out what you are having a reaction to.

Some medications do make you feel drowsy – but look on the bright side. Apparently naps in the afternoon can increase your IQ. I’m sure you felt refreshed after that nap too!

It would be terrible if you were allergic to Moko. I hope that you find out you’re allergic to something small and avoidable. I’m sure you’re sitting impatiently with worry and hope – I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you’re not allergic to something you love! <3

  9. Manda February 24, 2010

A few years ago I broke out into itchy hives all over my body. I had not idea what caused me to have the reaction. The doctor said I probably wouldn’t find out what caused it until I came in contact with it again. That was back in summer of 2007 and so far I have yet to brake out again.

Hopefully, your experience is the same and whatever caused you to brake out in hives is something you won’t come in contact with again.

It would be absolutely horrible if you are allergic to Moko!

I’ll keep you and Moko in my thoughts and prayers.

Aww, I’m sorry you are having so many allergic reactions, Caity! I know they can be scary especially when you have no idea what you’re allergic to. I have the same issues but unfortunately all the allergy tests show I am NOT allergic to the things they test me for. So, I never know when I’m going to have hives or watery eyes at the drop of a hat which can be quite embarrassing. I hope your allergist can find out what it is and that it is NOT something you love!

Benadryl maeks me a zombie. I can’t stay awake, I end up drooling – all that good stuff. It always helps my allergies, though, which I guess is the point.

I hope you’re able to figure out what’s wrong and that you’re not allergic to something wonderful.

  12. Shannon February 24, 2010

Wow. I’m sorry to hear that! I hope that you’re not allergic to anything that you enjoy. It seems that as people get older, we become allergic to foods, which is weird too. I remember when I was younger, I could drink milk and eat dairy all day long. Now, I find out that I’m lactose intolerant. It sucks.

    Sorry to here this :-(
You really should get checked for allergies because they can sometimes worsen every time you have an attack.
If you are allergic to your cat there’s probably medicine or a shot you can get to take care of that. Cats are so cute, but I’m allergic to them :-(
Better to know what you’re allergic to though so this doesn’t happen again, good luck! :-)

Usually if you have a quick, intense reaction like that, it’s something you just came in contact, so that would be the easiest way to figure out what you had a reaction to. Try to figure out what was new or different that day. Have you switched to a new shampoo or soap? Laundry detergent? It would have to be something more obscure like that I would think. Perfume, smoke, seafood, nuts are all pretty common.
Usually people don’t suddenly become allergic to cats like that, so I think kitty’s safe :)
An allergist probably won’t be able to tell you because they have to test one by one and only test common things. If it was something common, you would be suffering every day.
I’m allergic to something and have no idea what. I didn’t test positive for anything, but 80% of the time, I’m stuffy. Luckily that’s my only symptom and I just take zyrtec every day and haven’t had a problem since. Unfortunately that might be an issue when I’m pregnant, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.
I definitely recommend going to an allergist though, because they can prescribe something you can take if you have a reaction that won’t knock you out like benadryl.

  15. Krysten February 24, 2010

Ugh that is no fun. My mom once switched laundry detergents and my brother ended up breaking out in horrible hives from the new stuff. It was awful. Hopefully it’s just something like that that’s easily changeable.

  16. Jonna February 24, 2010

Sorry to heart that, but even if it is your cat, you can get allergy meds. I’m allergic to cats, and I have three of them. :) Don’t worry. Even if it is a cat allergy, you’ll manage! Hives don’t sound like cat allergy though, more like something you’ve come in physical contact with… perfume, lotion, something like that?

    *huggles*

  17. Jonna February 24, 2010

And naturally, I meant sorry to HEAR, not heart that. *noddle*

  18. Sara February 24, 2010

You can’t be allergic to Moko. :(

Hopefully it’s something in replacement proteins you’ve been eating. I’m sorry to hear you had such a crazy reaction, Miss Caity. *hugs*

  19. nichole February 24, 2010

I hope you are not allergic to the kitty! I think i’m allergic to the new one(I never was like this with Shadow though, so it might be just a cold or something) of course this is like an allergic like sneezing and sore throat.

I had something similar happen to me a couple of times before. I think it was what kind of washing stuff I was using to do clothes in, because my mom had changed and me and my dad have really sensative skin

of course i do have food allergies like whoa…

anyways you need to find out ASAP so you don’t have a freaky reaction to something!!

  20. terin February 24, 2010

I broke out in hives one day last week, and I’m still not sure what caused it. Definitely not a good experience and I hope it’s not the cat.

  21. Kim February 24, 2010

Sorry about the hives. I’ve been there. It sucks. Big time.

Even if you are allergic to the cat, there are things you can do to keep the cuddles coming. I’m allergic to cats and dogs and have two cats and a dog. So is The Mister. We’re a testament to how far the allergy field has come.

  22. Michelle February 24, 2010

Aww, that’s really sucky. And I hope you’re not allergic to cats, because that would be bad for both you and Moko, poor kitty. Have you recently changed brands of laundry detergent or soap or dish soap or something? That could be a cause too, of hives. Hope going to the allergist helps you figure things out.

  23. Shola February 24, 2010

I would hate to think it’s your cat, pets are adorable and too lovable not to cuddle! I would hate to think I could never hold my dog again. D:

  24. Angie February 24, 2010

I hate being allergic to animals, I have to take a Benadryl if I want to go to my Grandma’s house without having an asthma attack. I really doubt if you’re allergic to your kitty, though, so don’t worry. I second Lissy’s comment about the cause.

  25. Jess February 25, 2010

I do hope you’re not allergic to cats!!

On that note, when I was younger I was diagnosed with asthma. I was given a booklet about asthma which said that people with asthma should not be in contact with cats. My response was along the lines of, “I will destroy my asthma through sheer force of will before I start to avoid cats.”

Funnily enough, my asthma fixed itself after not very long.

  26. Jannie Funster February 25, 2010

Maybe it was a random airborne allergen, like someone’s perfume or laundry soap?

So glad I’m not allergic to my cat – I love that little snuggle-kitty sooooooo much! I obviously outgrew my child hood allergy to them.

    xo
