As I told you in my last post, we went out to visit Josh’s dad at French Pass. The drive out there was beautiful so it only follows that French Pass itself is absolutely breathtaking.
Josh’s dad was staying out there in his house bus for a while in between some work that he was doing and he told us to come and see him and he’d show us around and take us fishing. I was so excited to see some more of New Zealand and also to see Josh’s dad again who I get along with very well. I also love fishing. I grew up near the water and my family owned a boat while I was growing up so it was not a few thing to me yet it was something that I do enjoy very much. I think it’s always fun to do the things you enjoy in a different way and in a different setting.
Oh, and it was very different but I had an absolute blast!
(And just a warning: picture overload once again!)
We set out in the boat at French Pass after loading up all the gear and getting all bundled up. It was still pretty freezing cold at this point but I was wearing my thermals and lots of layers so I was nice and warm. Plus, I think the adrenaline kept me warm, too.
I couldn’t believe how clean the water was. I could practically see the bottom in places I never thought possible!
Don’t forget about Josh and The Old Man!
Josh calls him Old Man. In this case I suppose it’s fitting because I kept thinking “Old Man and the Sea!”
Josh started getting too camera happy. I think he said something like “but I can’t help it because you’re so beautiful hehe!” Then I forgave him. He always knows the right thing to say. He’s such a smooth talker. Cheeky bugger.
So then I hammed it up for him because that’s what I do. That’s right. You love it.
I caught a fish! In reality, I caught 2 fish at once here but the photo was snapped about a second too early. My line has 2 hooks on it and I snagged 2 at once! They were both legal size too! I’m just pro like that. Josh didn’t catch 2 fish at once. He just caught one at a time! He did catch them easier and more frequently than I did, though… even if he had to throw some back because they were to small… but I still win because I caught 2 at once, right?
Here is my proof! They are both on my line! BAM!
Here is our haul. Josh and I each caught 3, I think. Although the time it took Josh to catch his 3 was about 10 times as fast as it took me to catch my 3. I still win because I caught 2 fish right at the end, in my opinion.
After we got back Josh and I went for a lovely walk along the shore because it’s kind of hard not to when it’s so damn beautiful all around you.
Josh saw this rock and thought, “we have to go stand inside it!”
So we did.
Here I am inside the bus trying to warm up with some tea. That cheeky bird you see is not a kiwi like everyone mistakes it for. It’s a weka and I am obsessed with them. I think they are some of the most awesome birds I’ve ever seen and I love them so much. They are also flightless birds that are indigenous to NZ and they are adorable and smart and were just chillin’ all over the campground.
Josh went fishing again in the morning with his dad. They went to a more rough part of French Pass further out in the ocean and his dad only takes one other person in his boat with him when he goes there so I let them go out and I stayed and went for a walk.
The following pictures are taken by Josh (so is the first picture in this post) and I think they’re freaking awesome. Enjoy.
This last one he wants to get framed and blown up. It’s his favourite.
I hope you enjoyed! Sorry for the insane amount of pictures. If you can believe it, I actually took way more pictures than this! There were just so many pictures to choose from and I wanted to share it all with you!

BEAUTIFUL!!
Beautiful photos! ~ I’m glad you had such a nice time with Josh and his dad! ~ Love, Mom
Caity,
You know me…the more picture, the better:~) I loved all of these. NZ looks beautiful and rugged. I used to fish a lot as a kid and I remember the fun of catching something, except for the times when I caught catfish. I got to hear a lot swear words from my dad when that happened.
I am so pleased you are happy again and with Josh. Thanks for sharing this adventure. I love it all, except the cold!!!!
Yay! I’m back already, Caity!! Less prodigal in my commenting than I thought I’d be! :)
Okay, you said “thermals” “bugger” and “damn” in one post. New Zealand is rubbing off beautifully on you! You sound closer to a Canadian now. :) :)
Those morning fishing pictures are simply FREAKING AWESOME. As are the ones of you guys peeking out of the hole in the rock.
What a wonderful adventure you’re both on. What great pix for the grand-kids!!! Glad Josh is camera-happy. I agree on the blow-up one.
Oh, and 2 fish at once — ace! You pro you.
xoxo
That looked like so much fun! And it sounds like you enjoyed yourself :) All of the pictures are awesome, but I think he’s right about that last one. Gorgeous! Must have learned a little something from you ;) lol I think my favorite though is you sitting the bus. Can’t wait for more!
Pictures look awesome, such a breathtaking view. Glad you’re having (or had, in July?) a good time :)
The photos are cute! I love your hat! :) Josh’s Dad looks like the Gorton’s Fisherman, hehe. :)
So beautiful :)
I’m a going to act like a goofball: FISHIES! NOM NOM NOM! Did you eat them?
These photos are breathtaking, the scenery is just gorgeous! This is one of my favorite things about your blog because I’ve never traveled out of the US before and it allows me a glimpse into another world of sorts. I’m so glad you guys all had fun!
Waiting for these photos to load was surely worth it, because they’re gorgeous! I chuckled at see the photo of Old Man, because just before I read on, I did think of “Old Man and the Sea” as well.
Congratulations on snagging two fish in one go. Perhaps it’s just me, though, but in your first capture, I could swear there is a part of a second fish peeking out from behind the fish in front. Talk about a lucky catch. Did you guys cook the fish you caught? Where I come from, that’s what happens.
Great you had a great time with Josh and your father-in-law. Hope the remainder of your weekend is great!
New Zealand is absolutely beautiful and I hope one day I am able to visit it. As for now, I will just live vicariously through you.
I would blow up all the photos and frame them in a set! They are beautiful. :’) And I love the ones of you guys in the rock. Rock formations always amaze me.
Congratulations on catching two fish at once! James is yet to take me fishing, I’ve never been. He said it’s more about the sitting-in-a-boat than the catching fish, for him. :3
Gorgeous photos! I love them, the sunrise is just beautiful.
And I agree with you. Catching 2 fish at once is 1000000x better than catching 2 one at a time ;)
I love this line “:Josh didn’t catch 2 fish at once. He just caught one at a time!”
