I'm Caity, a 25 year old living in New York with my husband, Josh. I'm a math teacher, amateur photographer, gamer, dreamer, blogger, singer, self-proclaimed dork, and wannabe kiwi. I sparkle!
So, New Moon came out today. As I’m sure most of you are aware, the Twilight Saga isn’t really my cup of tea. I read the books, and I decided that they were okay but I wasn’t thrilled. I didn’t even see the first movie. I basically don’t even care enough to see the movies. I apologize if you’re a big fan. I have nothing against you. I have nothing against Twilight. I just feel absolutely nothing toward it.
That being said, the amount of kids absent today in the school that I work in with the excuse that they had gone to the midnight release of “that new Vampire movie” and were too tired to come to school was absolutely ridiculous. I giggled to myself the entire day as students upon students ratted out their little friends to me, their favorite substitute teacher. It was rather cute and I have to admit I got a major kick out of it. The only thing that was cuter was the kids who were sulking that they weren’t there too. I told them that they were better off, though, and that their friends would have to make up all this work and they wouldn’t have to! That didn’t seem to make them feel any better, though. Oh well.
The other highlight of my day entailed when I had to cover one period of gym. In the district I work for, they don’t allow substitute teachers to let the kids play gym unless they are certified in physical education. This makes a whole lot of sense to me and I’m just as happy to let the kids have a study hall. However, you try telling a bunch of boys on a Friday who are all hyped up for gym, one of their only periods of freedom where they can run around and let out some energy, that they have to sit and do homework and you see how they take it. Basically, they told me that I should go back to college and get my degree in physical education and not in math and they let me know it rather rudely. I know they were just disappointed but it actually hurt my feelings. I worked really hard for my degree, silly kids!
I really should bring my camera to school on Monday and take a picture of our Yam-O-Meter. It’s awesome. Our school partnered up with a bunch of other local schools and our task was to collect canned yams for a local soup kitchen. We made a Yam-O-Meter to keep track of how many cans our school collected and the morning announcements used words like “Yam-tastic,” “Yammy,” and “Yam-o-rific!” You can’t beat that! The Yam-o-meter was supposed to be my blog picture for today. I’ve been slacking with my blog photos and all you’ve gotten to see is my ugly mug for the past week. I’ll spare you today and won’t post my 365 picture. Oh, walls of texts are so boring! It will inspire me to take a picture of something tomorrow, I hope!
My calendar is absolutely free this weekend! I’m excited!!

As a writer I love and hate when people make words by mashing various ones together, but I’ll admit that I love yam-o-meter! It’s fantastic! (Or Yam-tastic.)
And kids can say completely thoughtless things because they’re almost completely lacking in empathy. That, and I don’t think they understand how hard it is to get a degree (especially in MATH!).
If it helps, I’m in awe of you :)
Have a fantastic weekend!
Is your school system actually excusing these absences? I know that our school did. I think it’s ridiculous myself.
They are, especially when parents say that they are taking them to the doctor instead. I agree, it’s absolutely ridiculous.
I can’t believe the school has no punishment for this kind of absence. With no penalty they are promoting the role the media plays in young kids lives… No wonder America is behind in test scores with the res of the world (as you mentioned in a previous post). In France you need an official doctors note, a parents note does not suffice. The teachers should all give easy pop quizes that would in a way give official extra credit points to all t he responsible students who made the bette choice of attending school that a pop-culture film.
I am sorry the gym students were rude to you. I know how that feels. Kids can be so belittling sometimes. But you know your are a good, accomplished person, that you worked hard for your degree. They are just ignorant and have so many life skills yet to learn….
Have a super weekend!
I would have loved to see my mother’s reaction if I told her I didn’t want to go to school because I had seen a midnight movie. But then again, she would have never allowed me to go on a school night.
How times have changed. Especially with the students being rude to you. They just don’t realize how hard it is to earn a degree.
Hope you have a good weekend :-)

Oh wow. That is pretty ridiculous that they get away with that as an excuse to not go to school!
It’s ridiculous to stay home just because of that. I bet it was fun to listen to the other students the day after ;)
I can’t understand the hype about the Twilight-saga. I like it, and I really liked the first movie because of one thing – hot vampires. If I would see it again I don’t thin it would be so great ;)
I yam what I yam ? :)
I’m with you on the whole twilight thing.
I cannot believe that kids missed school because of the Twilight movie! And who are these parents?! This horrifies me a bit.
You know, its funny, I went to the midnight showing of star wars episode 3 and I was still in school (and I went on a school night) and it was almost like having battle scars to come in with only 4 hours of sleep. I’ve seen almost every midnight showing of a major blockbuster (last one being HP) and I generally don’t care about the lack of sleep if the movie is awesome which so far they all have been! ^_^ but that’s shows ya how warped pur youth are today, so lazy! What’s four hours of sleep! I’ve had to operate on much less or none!
That blows that those kids were being rude. I don’t know where our youth is headed these days. But don’t let a kid make u even feel a twinge of upset because really what do they know at this age about getting a degree!
Here in Harrison County WV an excused absent is the same as an unexcused one. If you miss more then ten days then you have to take the end of the year exams which means you have to go an extra week during the summer while the kids who missed less then ten days get out a week earlier.
I haven’t even read the Twilight books. I am not interested at all.
