I'm Caity, a 25 year old living in New York with my husband, Josh. I'm a math teacher, amateur photographer, gamer, dreamer, blogger, singer, self-proclaimed dork, and wannabe kiwi. I sparkle!
My sleep study went well. My room was very nice. It was like a hotel room, in fact! It was not like a hospital room at all. The only thing that reminded me that I was in a hospital room was that lovely plastic bracelet on my wrist. Oh, and the million wires attached to my body.
I didn’t realize how many wires they were going to put all over me. I guess I was naive enough to think that they’d just put me in a little room and then watch me go to sleep through a glass paneling all night. I know it’s silly, but the things we picture in our heads when we don’t really know what to expect are quite silly, aren’t they?
So what did happen? Well, first I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork about how I have been sleeping and what I did that day and how I felt right then. Then they hooked up a bunch of wires all over me. Some monitored my heart, some monitored my breathing, some were microphones to show if I snored or talked in my sleep, some were to monitor if I kicked or tossed and turned, and some monitored my brain waves. The most annoying ones were the microphone which was taped right on my neck and the breathing wires which rested just outside my nose. Eww?
The other slightly annoying thing was the fact that they put GLUE in my HAIR. Maybe it was paste, maybe it was goo, but whatever the heck it was, it was strong enough to hold wires and other mechanical devices all over my head and in my hair while I slept. Oh, and did I mention that I had to keep them on all day today? Yup. My sleep study was not only last night but during the day today, as well. I had to spend the day there and take naps every hour for 15-20 minutes. It tested if I was able to fall asleep during the day after sleeping during the night and, if I did fall asleep, how long it took me to fall asleep and if I entered REM sleep. I fell asleep every single nap. Oops.
I don’t have my results yet but hopefully I’ll have them within a week or so.
I’m still exhausted, but I’m pretty happy after my shower. Washing all that goo is out of my hair was the highlight of my day. The rest of my day was spent trying not to fall asleep in a boring room and taking short naps. Fun, right?

I think Joey and I should do one of these since our sleep schedule is screwed up so easily and we’re always run down w/o caffeine. Plus, I end up tossing and turning most nights unless I’m dead tired. Hope everything comes out and they figure out what’s causing your sleep issues.
Sounds like a whole lot of fun. Note the sarcasm there. I don’t know if I could sleep with wires, microphones and goo all over me. But then again, when I’m sleepy enough.. I sleep. I’m really interested in hearing the results as I’m sure you are! I’m sorry that you aren’t sleeping well. I went through a phase like that a year or two ago. It lasted for awhile & it was terrible.. I gained weight, I looked horrible, and I was irritated and groggy all the time. Reading before bed has really helped me. Plus, I take some medicine for anxiety and I think that may have even helped my sleep some, weird.
I wonder if i should have one of those done , in all seriousness I have really considered it. i have sleeping issues out the ..UGH!!
I hope that they find whatever your problem is, and that it isnt serious and that they can correct it for you
I’ve been told before that I could probably benefit from a sleep study. It was interesting to hear what actually goes on. I hope this helps you figure out what is wrong so that you can fix it.
Gosh!
That’s how I imagined it when you first wrote about it. But it’s amazing that you could fall asleep like that, Matrix-like.
Well, I hope they find something to make your sleep improve!
Good night!
Lol, it’s not actual glue. I had to attach wires to myself for a biology lab once last year, but it feels like glue though. Hope all the results turn out well :)
doesn’t sound like much fun. hope it winds up being worth it
I totally sympathize with all that. *hugs* I had to do a sleep study like that a couple of years ago and then another smaller one at home a few weeks ago, so I know what a pain it is. It’s good though that you got such a nice hospital room! I’m sure that would have made it more comfortable for you. :) Oh, and thumbs-down to the glue! I only had to worry about the sticky jelly stuff on the back of the electrodes (they were stick-ons).
Wow though, you were able to sleep for 15-20 mins every hour during the day as well? You must be quick to fall asleep! Anyway, I hope the test results aren’t too bad, or at least something that can be easily fixed/controlled. *fingers crossed* :)
hope you get the results again!! I couldn’t sleep in the day
Ooh, maybe I should do one of those tests. My sleeping has been WEIRD to say the least. It has been for the past uhm five years or so. Maybe longer. Sometimes I sleep 8 hours a night and sometimes I barely sleep a full hour in a row.
I’m not one for the snot stuff on my hair though. Maybe one of those bald caps or something, but not goo. Yuck I hope the results are good.
I can’t imagine sleeping well with wires and machines hooked up to me all night! I am however capable of falling asleep within 3 minutes of laying down no matter what time of day it is, it’s so strange. I hope your results turn out well..hopefully it isn’t sleep apnea!!
I can’t afford to sleep with wires even with just few minutes. I hope the results will be fine. *crosses fingers*
I have so totally been wondering about you and this sleep study. I wonder if I could get to sleep at all with all those gadgets on me??
When do you get the results ?
I get my results in about a week! I’ll be sure to blog about it!
I hope they find something that will help you feel better. I can imagine it’s hard to sleep with all those things attached though! I was in the hospital last week and I had to be hooked to the oxygen machine so I got those tubes up to my nose to help me breathe. It was very annoying to lay or move let alone sleep!
Oh, glad you got that goo out of your hair too :D
